Nourish students around the country have spent the past few months researching and selecting local, grassroots non-profits who are sustainably addressing poverty in their communities. Over the next few months the Nourish Chapters and international partners will work to develop appropriate projects for the students’ skill level and time frame spent in-country. Nourish International is excited to announce a number of our upcoming summer 2012 projects!
Yale University – Moche
The Yale Nourish Chapter is partnering with Moche, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the standard of living in impoverished communities, preserving archaeological sites, and promoting research and education on the rich cultural heritage of Peru. The project will finish construction on a health clinic that the Chapter began constructing with Moche last summer that, when finished, will serve over 12,000 people of Bello Horizonte, Peru.
Rice University – PIER
The Rice Chapter is partnering with PIER, a Honduran Organization that seeks to improve the economic development of the island of Roatan and the quality of life of its people by ensuring excellence of education. The project aims to create a set of reusable self-directed learning kits that would allow elementary aged students to teach themselves basic math, science, and English skills.
University of New Mexico and University of Kansas – ABAN
UNM and KU are partnering with ABAN, an organization that provides women of Accra, Ghana with the skills and education they need to sew recycled sachet bags into unique, handmade products to earn an income to provide for themselves and their families. ABAN provides the financial boost and personal assistance needed for these girls to transition from a life in the streets to a respectable standing in society. This goal of this project is to build a workshop so ABAN can grow their business, and purchase livestock and cultivate a garden to improve their food supply
Universities of California – Santa Barbara and Davis – Sarswati
This summer the UC Santa Barabara and UC Davis Chapters will partner with the Sarswati Peace School to support the village’s education system. This project strives to make the local school accessible to the children of Arupokhari-1, Nepal and ensure that they have a quality education. Students will build additional classrooms, teachers’ quarters, a library, and a computer lab. Student will also construct an eco-friendly soccer field and implement a mentorship program and peace curriculum to include culture, art, storytelling, gardening, music, and dance, along with academics.
